Residential, datacenter, mobile proxies: which to choose?

The type of IP address you route through is one of the most decisive factors for reaching public data, and one of the most misunderstood. Datacenter, residential, mobile: these three families don't share the same price, the same level of trust, or the same use cases. Picking the right one means avoiding both needless blocks and steep bills.
Three families, a hierarchy of trust
A server that receives a request looks at where it comes from, and ranks the origin by an implicit order of credibility.
Datacenter proxy
The IP belongs to a hosting provider, a server rented in a data center. It's the cheapest, the fastest, and available in near-unlimited quantities. Its weakness is also its nature: almost no real visitor browses from a datacenter. Protections know this and treat these addresses with suspicion. Perfect for sites with no particular defenses, risky against a serious anti-bot system.
Residential proxy
The IP is that of a real consumer connection, someone's home internet box. Its strength comes from exactly that: the same address serves a real human checking their email or watching a video. It therefore inherits a good reputation, and becomes much harder to filter without risking blocking real customers. It's the common choice for protected sites.
Mobile proxy
The IP comes from a cellular carrier. This is the highest level of trust, for a structural reason: carriers share a single address among thousands of subscribers. Blocking that IP would amount to punishing an entire city. Protections therefore avoid it. In exchange, it's the rarest and most expensive resource.
Mobile, then residential, then datacenter: the more an IP looks like a real human's, the more it gets through, and the more it costs.

Why the IP isn't everything
It's the classic beginner's trap: believing that a nice residential IP fixes everything. It only corrects a single detection layer, the network one. All the others stay in place: the TLS handshake fingerprint, JavaScript execution, the browser fingerprint, behavior. A flawless residential IP paired with a client that shakes hands like a script gets spotted immediately.
In other words, the residential proxy is necessary against certain protections, but never sufficient on its own. It has to come with a real browser and a consistent signature. We go into detail on this point in our article on how anti-bot systems work.
How to choose, in practice
- Simple site, no protection: datacenter is enough, it's the most economical. No need to pay for residential.
- Protected site, geolocated content: residential is the way to go, preferably in the right country, since many sites tailor their content to the visitor's region.
- Heavily defended target: mobile offers the best pass rate, to be reserved for cases where residential is no longer enough, given its cost.
The right approach isn't to grab the most expensive option as a precaution, but to use just the level needed for each target.
